The Happiest Times I Ever Ignored
by Kyle Fang
Inspired by Hayden Pedigo's song and record of the same title—itself a tribute to the words of National Lampoon co-founder Doug Kenney—"…the happiest times I’ve ever ignored…" were the words to set the tone for quiet introspection.
In spring of 2026, Kyle Fang spends four days on the road to work out some internalized emotions as he explored new terrain in his home province of British Columbia, where the Fraser and Thompson Rivers briefly meet and caress the semi-arid valleys. In and around the villages of "Gold Country," he sees glimpses of a once-prosperous Cariboo Gold Rush and the harrowing wildfire effects of recent years. With past and present depicted in the land, Fang learns from the salt of the earth and how one endures in this neck of the woods.
Ultimately, for Fang, this backdrop of big skies and railway-traced rivers gave space for reflection of his own past, exploring the prominent feelings of loneliness and and monotony experienced in his early 20s and particularly not knowing how to navigate them. He can't help but realize only in hindsight that those times were some of the most mentally formative for his coming-of-age, feelings that he tries to deliberately search for again now they seem to be fleeting with a maturing head space.
Approaching the final year of his 20s, The Happiest Times I Ever Ignored is a visual homage to these emotions as Fang challenges them once more—this time learning to embrace them as peace in solitude.
