Bio

Kyle Fang (b. 1997, Zhongshan, China) is a photographer and artist based in Vancouver, BC—on the unceded territories of the Musqueam, Squamish, and Tsleil-Waututh Nations.

Fang’s artistic approach and philosophies are informed by the rich traditions of documentary-style photography during an era where the world was primarily depicted in monochrome. With a mix of digital photography and medium-format analog film, he keeps to this tradition with his preference of working in black and white, a format that he believes allows for form and substance to take place distraction-free. When not in the field, he is a recluse in the darkroom as an avid printmaker of silver gelatin prints. With his works, he seeks chronicle the contemporary social landscape of his lifetime, as do the works of his prominent influences such as Henry Wessel, Garry Winogrand, and Mark Steinmetz. It is through these motivations that Fang uses photography as a means of collecting time, talking to himself, a distraction from distractions, and making sense of the world—whichever reason he is particularly feeling that day.
